Week 3 -- Emphasis on Focal Point

Emphasis by Contrast

Notice how the blue dress really stands out from the warm colors of the background.

Emphasis on Isolation

The man standing on the water so far away from the boat and all the other passengers becomes the focal point. Also notice that the passengers are pointing and looking towards him as well.

Emphasis on Placement
Speaking from a photographer’s point of view, in the first picture the focal point is the water because it is placed, or cropped, to take up most of the canvas. In the second photo the focal point is the sky for the same reason. The sky is placed through cropping to take up most of the canvas.

Emphasis by One Element
The flower being emphasized by its bold color and focus compared to the background, is the focal point. (Also the fact that it is the only element in the photo.)

Absence of Focal Point

This photo of a hay field emphasized the whole surface and there is no one starting point or visual climax.
